In Hollywood, 37 is Too Old to Be a 55 Year Old’s Love Interest

37 year old  actress Maggie Gyllenhaal revealed in an interview a producer claimed she was too old for a role. What role, you may ask?

The lover of a 55 year old man.

This is what qualifies as "over the hill" in Hollywood.

This is what qualifies as “over the hill” in Hollywood.

A 37 year old woman is too old to play the love interest of a 55 year old man?! “It made me feel bad, and then it made me feel angry, and then it made me laugh,” she said.

Classic, ageist hollywood.

So to be an "older" love interest you just need to win an Oscar!

Can’t anyone see that having all of these older men (silver foxes is what they get called) being paired up with 20-somethings is just a little…creepy? Do they really believe age distinguishes a man and ruins a woman? Bullshit. They age but remain in similar roles, while their female costars keep getting replaced younger and younger.

This happens alllll the time. That’s why I’m looking forward to seeing Spectre, the new James Bond movie. Daniel Craig, our Bond, is 46. Our new “Bond Girl?” Monica Bellucci, she’s 50. James Bond being interested in a woman his own age? That’s a big change to the average 14 year difference between Bond and “Bond Girl.”

It’s crazy that a film franchise known for being all about guns and womanizing is the one choosing to close this Hollywood age gap.

This is appalling! I knew Hollywood was ageist but that graph really opened up my eyes to the extent of the problem. Thank you for sharing- let’s hope this changes in the future…
