Singer Janelle Monáe’s style is on point. The perfectly tailored suits. The flawless pompadour. The perfect cat eye and bold red lip- she’s iconic. She’s said of her fashion, “Honestly, I don’t believe in menswear. I focus on what pieces are most timeless, transcendent, match my lifestyle, remain remarkable, and command intriguing attention across the room at an art gallery.”
Some fool on twitter recntly tweeted at Monáe, “girl, stop being so soulful and be sexy . . tired of those dumbass suits.” Monáe’s response?
Monáe brings up an important issue- the common assumption that a woman’s clothing choices are made with men in mind. It’s important that in the way we choose to represent ourselves- in clothing, makeup, etc, we do it for no one else but ourselves. To feel good about ourselves.
Monáe is all about this. In an interview with Afrobella she said of her collaboration with Covergirl, “One of my main focuses is to help redefine what it means to be a strong and beautiful woman in the music and fashion worlds, and to empower the wonderful things that make us unique.” You can’t see it, but I’m snapping my fingers.
If you haven’t listened to Monáe, do yourself a favor and listen to this fiercely talented woman. Here’s her latest video that just came out and it’s so, so good. Afterwards, give Q.U.E.E.N a listen. It’s classic Monáe.
